We all have dealt with astrology of estimations in our life. However, it is a practice and you get better with time.
However I have seen junior engineers giving "less" estimates in enthusiasm whereas seniors give seemingly "more" estimates for the same tasks. Part experience and part risk management I would say.
Right and completely agree! The ability to make sound estimates is often honed through experience. However, it's common at the beginning of careers to underestimate challenges, which could be partly due to over-optimism. Providing 'more' estimates also won't indicate pessimism but rather being more practical with all possible variables that could come in the equation :)
